Spend on the problem you actually have. If the complaint is that you sound distant, thin, muffled or echoey, software cannot help much and a better-placed microphone will. If the complaint is that people hear your surroundings, the dog, the traffic, the open-plan chatter, software is usually the faster and cheaper cure. Most disappointing purchases come from mixing those two up, so the first job is a diagnosis that costs nothing.
Record yourself before you buy anything
Open any recorder, or start a meeting with only yourself in it and record that. Speak normally for a minute in the conditions you usually work in, then stay silent for twenty seconds. Listen back on headphones.
Judge the talking part first. Does your voice sound close and full, or as if you are standing across the room? Is there a hollow ring after each word? Do loud syllables crackle? Those are capture problems. Then judge the silent part. Whatever you hear there, hum, fan, street, family, is the noise floor your listeners live with. That is an environment problem.
Be honest about which one bothers you more, because the remedies barely overlap.
What a microphone upgrade really buys
The biggest gain from new hardware is rarely the quality of the capsule. It is distance. A laptop microphone sits an arm’s length away and hears the room as loudly as it hears you. A headset boom or a desk mic on an arm sits a hand’s width from your mouth, so your voice arrives far louder than everything else. That improved ratio of voice to room is something no algorithm can create afterward; software can only work with the ratio it is given.
Closeness also reduces reverberation, the smeared, bathroom-like quality that makes speech tiring to follow. And a directional pickup pattern, common on headset booms and many dynamic microphones, rejects sound from the sides and rear.
There is one trap worth knowing. Large, sensitive condenser microphones look professional and are popular gifts, but in an untreated room they capture more of the room, not less. Buyers often end up with a nicer-sounding recording of their refrigerator. For calls in an ordinary home, a modest wired headset or a dynamic mic used close will typically beat an expensive condenser used far away.
What software can and cannot rescue
Modern suppression is very good at the environment problem. Fans, keyboards, barking and clatter can be reduced dramatically, often with no purchase at all, since the major meeting platforms ship suppression and operating systems increasingly include it. A paid utility earns its place when you need stronger removal than the built-in option, consistent behavior across several apps, or cleanup of other people’s noisy audio coming in.
Its limits are just as clear. Suppression cannot restore a voice that was never captured properly. Feed it a quiet, reverberant signal from a distant laptop mic in a loud room and it has to cut deep to remove the noise, which takes pieces of your speech with it. The result is the warbling, underwater tone people associate with over-processing. It also cannot fix clipping, a failing cable or a Bluetooth headset that has dropped into its low-quality call mode.

The third takes calls from a kitchen table on a laptop mic with a dishwasher running. She has both problems. For her the order matters: hardware first, because a close microphone lowers the amount of work the software must do, and gentle suppression on a strong signal sounds far more natural than aggressive suppression on a weak one.
Do not forget the free options either. Moving the laptop closer, closing a door and putting a rug or a few cushions in a bare room are all worth trying before any money changes hands.

Diagnose with a recording. Fix position and the room for free. Turn on the suppression you already have. If you still sound distant, buy a close microphone.
